The Book of Bereishit ends on a high note. After Yakov is buried and עם ישראל returns to Egypt, the brothers assume that now Yosef will punish them for having sold him into slavery.
Yosef is moved once again by his brothers’ remorse and answers with, התחת אלוקים אנוכי? Am I able to act in Hashem’s place?
Rabbeinu Bechaye gives numerous examples of individuals throughout history who were so full of themselves that they really believed they were like G-d.
Pharoah is one of the first who was guilty of this, as was סיסרא and נבוכדנצר, just to name a few.
Every morning in our prayers we say משפיל גאים ומגביה שפלים, that Hashem lowers the haughty and raises up the humble.
We must always be reminded of this reality and put all of our faith in Hashem and realize that all of our success is only because of His abundant kindness.
