This coming Shabbat is a very special one. We will read from what is known as פרשת פרה, that deals with the Red Heifer.
This Parsha is always read before the month of Nissan. It was necessary for all of the Jewish people to come to Jerusalem on Pesach, and offer the קרבן פסח.
In order to do so, all needed to be in a state of purity. If anyone had come in contact with the dead, they needed to become purified by the ashes of the פרה אדומה.
This is a very difficult Mitzva to understand and only Moshe Rabbeinu understood it.
In any case, it was a clear instruction as to what one needed to do in order to enter the Beit Hamikdash and partake of sanctified foods.
There have only been nine Red Heifers in all of Jewish history. There was one in Moshe’s time, one in Shlomo’s, and seven during the second Temple period.
It is also a prerequisite for our building the Third Temple. Rumor has it that there is a פרה אדומה currently available. Let’s hope we get to use it for the coming Pesach holiday.
